Helen's speech
By Helen Hatton,   Area Officer, Beagle Welfare

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for attending today and for raising money through sponsorship.   I’m sure you will agree that it has been a fabulous day, the weather has been more than kind and hopefully you all enjoyed the walk.   It is so lovely to see all the welfare dogs here today.

I would also like to thank Julie & John for all the help organising today, they have put a lot of time & effort into this event and I think you will agree it has been a huge success.   Also to the people who have worked behind the scenes making cakes, marshalls & neighbours offering car parking spaces.

I can tell you that we have raised in excess of £4,000 today (amended to £2,700 after the event, see note on home page) which is absolutely fantastic and you should all give yourselves a huge round of applause.   Well done.   Thank you so much for your efforts.

We offered a prize for the person who raised the most sponsorship and this was actually Judi Harvey, one of our area officers, who raised a whopping £256.   As Judi is “on the committee” so to speak, she has our heartfelt thanks, but isn’t going to get the prize!     The next highest sponsorship has been raised by two separate people: Jo Boulby and Abigail Holiday-Bennion and we’d like you both to accept a bottle of wine each as a token of our gratitude.   Thank you for your efforts.

Looking around at you all, it is wonderful to see so many happy Beagles here today.   Beagle Welfare always needs good homes for Beagles that cannot stay in their initial homes for a variety of reasons – each one of you will know that not everyone can cope with a Beagle.   They are more often than not very large personalities in a medium sized body and they need more effort than many other breeds.   For this reason, not everyone is suitable to be the owner of a Beagle, and we get many Beagles come through our hands where owners have just not been able to cope.   In these cases, the dog is unhappy, the people are unhappy.   You are the people who pick up the pieces.   Each one of you has taken in a Beagle that needed a loving home.   Some of you have had to work harder to settle the dog into your home than others, just because each dog that comes through our hands is different and has a different prior history - but each Beagle here today is a reflection of your kindness and it is absolutely fantastic to see so many here together today.   And so well behaved!

The money that you have all helped raise today will help us to continue to find more homes for our lovely breed.

Now that we’ve all done the walk, eaten the cake and patted ourselves on the back, the most important part of the event starts and at this point we're relying on you.   You now need to collect your sponsorship money together and send it to me.     Beagle Welfare need both your cheque, made payable to Beagle Welfare and, so that we can claim gift aid on your sponsorship,   we also need your sponsorship form, so please don’t forget to put that in the envelope with the cheque.

We will let you all know in due course the final amount that we have raised once all your money has arrived.

Once again a huge thank you all for all your efforts.

Now to the raffle! ..........

Note:   the Hipkiss family won first prize in the raffle but because Megan drew her own raffle ticket out of the pan, were kind enough to forego the first prize and accepted something else from the raffle table instead.

The £50 meal voucher for the Goshawk Public House therefore went to Abigail Holiday-Bennion.   We hope Abigail and her husband enjoy every mouthful!

Two people won the prizes for best Beagle pictures:   Angela Holt and the Abbott family
